100 LBS!

There are 20 lbs of pears, 20 lbs of apples, 20 lbs of peaches, and 25 lbs of tomatoes sitting in my kitchen waiting for me to do something with them. I still need to go to the farmer's market and pick up my CSA share. What am I going to do with all this produce??

I'm going to freeze the tomatoes (I was told to wash them and put them into freezer bags and freeze them whole!), skin and slice and freeze the peaches (they are great in my green smoothies), put the apples in the cool basement, and hope that the pears don't all ripen at the same time.

My fridge is still jammed full with the produce from last week's CSA share (probably another 20 lbs of veggies). Roland's been traveling and Ike doesn't love the veggies so much - I can't eat all this!

Poor Me. Too much food on hand. Everyone should have this kind of trouble.

Turns out we don't like turnips so much. You are welcome to come take all my CSA turnips away.

If I lived close, I would help you eat all that food :-) So funny story... I was talking to my mom a couple days ago about my sister's birthday dinner this Sunday. She got really excited and asked, "Guess what we're having for dessert?" Her answer - green smoothies! I knew you'd approve :-)

You can freeze pears, too. When I have some that are a bit mealy or just ripening too fast, I pop them into the freezer, whole. When ready for a smoothie, I defrost one in the microwave just enough to cut out the core, then drop it into the blender. If you "do" yogurt, I highly recommend a combination of frozen pear, plain yogurt, lemon juice, and as little sweetener as you can get away with. That's an ancient WW recipe. :-)

Enjoying your blog!

Oh, and if you want to make a smaller volume with your tomatoes, a fairly quick trick is to cut out the stem, drop the tomato into a pot of boiling water, fish it out to cold water in one to two minutes, then just let the skin slip off, and squeeze the tomato gently to remove most of the seeds and liquid. Then a LOT of tomatoes pack into a small freezer container/bag.

Was your title supposed to be such a teaser? I want to go to the church farms and pick apples and peaches next week. I think I heard they were only 13 cents/pound if you pick some for the cannery first.

This is awesome. I think you need a healthy pie crust recipe for all those peaches, apples, and pears!

Something with whole wheat and flax? Or maybe even some seeds?

OOH! How about a healthy cobbler type recipe with whole oats and other whole grains? Don't bother with the sugar, I bet the fruit is sweet enough. Just sprinkle on some cinnamon and bake!

YUMMY!!!

hope this isn't a really stupid question, but I just got a big bunch of peaches too.....do you have to peel them before you put them in the blender for your green smoothies?

Princess - I wash them thoroughly and pit them and toss them in the smoothie. But if I am freezing them I skin them. You skin them by putting them in boiling water for 30 seconds, then plunging them in ice water - the skins will slide off.
